Sinead O’Brien has announced that her debut – Time Bend and Break the Bower – will be released on 10th June via Chess Club. The album will feature the new single and video ‘Holy Country.’ Alongside the announcement, O’Brien has announced UK, Ireland and Europe headline tours. Pre-order the album here.

Irish artist Sinead O’Brien has announced her debut album ‘Time Bend and Break The Bower’, due for release June 10th via Chess Club Records and available to pre-order now. Sinead also today releases a brand new single ‘Holy Country’, premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music by Steve Lamacq and accompanied by a stunning official music video directed by Chloé le Drezen. The album news and ‘Holy Country’ are also accompanied by the announcement of massive UK, Ireland and European tours pencilled in for September and October 2022 including London’s Lafayette – the full list of live dates is below, with tour tickets on pre-sale from Friday 18th.

The story of the album is built up in layers; one song giving context to the next” explains Sinead; “I thought about becoming undressed; testing my ideas, my voice. Working myself out across themes of identity, curiosity, creative process. Experimenting with the form and shape of language, using tone and delivery to get to the immediate centre of what I am saying. The record opens and closes with poems, these tracks have a really clear direction – a form which is set apart from the ‘songs’. I hold stops in different places, moving emphatically through the lyrics, changing the meaning. No punctuation – only the voice mapping out the way.”

“The album title “Time Bend and Break The Bower”, from the song ‘Multitudes’, came into my head and made its demands, an idea that pressed on me throughout the record. It has a very active role. The clock symbol is enlarged, it looms like a moon over my activity watching, counting me down to zero. Dripping with self-sabotage and the feeling of being chased; it pulls and pushes against the verses which talk of ’Multitudes’; the things that faithfully come back – the images, the words, creativity. It is creativity itself.”

Sinead O’Brien has released new single ‘Girlkind.’ Watch the new video below.

Irish artist Sinead O’Brien has released her brand new single ‘Girlkind’, out now via Chess Club Records. The metronomic track ‘Girlkind’ was produced by Dan Carey and is accompanied by a mesmerising video directed by Saskia Dixie.

“I wanted to create something that responded directly to the form and patterning of Sinead’s track.” explains Saskia; “We have been fascinated with the shape of performative and neutral states of being for a long time and the film for Girlkind, I think, gets to the core of this idea. The passing of time is a reliable certainty that drives on regardless of what contrasting state you are currently embodying, so this became the base thread for the piece. Simple domestic activities swell into loops that feel absurd and almost choreographic in parts of the work. Whilst action and consequence are mapped out visually, time becomes fragmented, as the action takes place in the neutral arena, and the result, a mark or stain, comes through into the performative sphere.”

Reflecting on her new single, Sinead says:

“I am out in the elements.
At the mercy of others.
Pulled in all directions.
I wait endless.

The phenomenon of the moving statues in Ireland during the 1980s becomes a motif.

“When the virgin rocks the statues come to stop”.

These verses are glimpses into experience. Girlkind and Humanhood

Persevering eternity.
Balancing, evaluating.
Going back and forth.
Keep forging a way through.”

Originally from Limerick, O’Brien’s work captures the everyday and the inbetween in a way that transcends any genre label. Writing from her own observations, O’Brien’s influences can be found in the realism of Mark E. Smith of The Fall and Patti Smith, and the works of literary icons such as Samuel Beckett, W.B Yeats, Flann O’Brien, Joan Didion and Albert Camus.
