Breland has teased the anticipated release of his debut album – CROSS COUNTRY – out 9th September, with the release of his new single, out today, ‘Told You I Could Drink,’ featuring Lady A.

Multi-talented artist Breland has teased the release of his highly anticipated debut album CROSS COUNTRY with the drop of the grooving breakup track “Told You I Could Drink” featuring Grammy award-winning trio Lady A. Co-written by Breland, Lady A’s Charles Kelley, and Zachary Manno, the must-hear song is available now across all digital and streaming platforms. “Lady A is one of the groups that introduced me to Country music, so when I finally got in studio with Charles Kelley, I already had a Lady A collab in mind,” explains BRELAND. “The two of us performed ‘Told You I Could Drink’ at BRELAND & Friends at the Ryman in March, and the response we got from the audience was what convinced us to cut the song and put it on my album. I’m so excited for the world to hear what we made.”“Anytime we have a chance to collaborate with BRELAND, you can be sure that we’ll be there,” Lady A’s Hillary Scott said. “When I first heard this song it immediately took me back to high school after a bad breakup, getting lost in an R&B groove.”

Hinting at a collaboration, the Amazon Music Breakthrough Artist joined Lady A as their special guest to perform their 9X PLATINUM “Need You Now” as part of ABC’s primetime special “CMA FEST.”

Breland’s forthcoming project, Cross Country, will feature standout collaborations with Ingrid Andress, Mickey Guyton, Thomas Rhett and Keith Urban. Living up to his moniker as the “pen point guard,” BRELAND’s pen name is on every song alongside an impressive list of some of the most in-demand songwriters including Ashley Gorley, HARDY, Sam Hunt, ERNEST, Ryan Hurd and more.

Lady A announce new single ‘What A Song Can Do,’ kicking off 2022. The track is available everywhere here.

Lady A have launched into the new year with their next single “What A Song Can Do” available everywhere now. The title track from their eighth studio album is as a love letter to fans, speaking to the power of music to get us through hard times. The track was written by the group’s Charles Kelley with Ryan Hurd, Sam Ellis and Laura Veltz. The track was an early fan favourite, as Kelley describes, “We have been overfilled with gratitude after releasing this album and we don’t take it lightly that after eight albums our music still resonates with so many people… This song is the summation of where our hearts are right now and how much music can really pull us through in times of need. We love writing songs about lost love and things like that, but I feel like our favorite material comes with a strong positive message.”

The trio’s career has been built around rich vocal harmony, vivid emotional writing and a smooth fusion of Country, Rock and Pop, making the band a model of mainstream success. Collectively, the trio have 11 No. 1s, 18 million albums sold, 34 million tracks, five billion digital streams and a global touring footprint prove the point. Best known for their 9X PLATINUM hit “Need You Now,” which is the highest certified song by a Country group, they have earned CMA Awards Vocal Group of the Year trophies three years in a row and countless other honours including five GRAMMY® Awards, Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, a Tony Award. The band have just wrapped their new tour, supported by Carly Pearce, Niko Moon and Tenille Arts in the States. For more information visit www.LadyAMusic.com.

Lady A have been reasserting their roots over the past year, with the release of the first chapter of their – What A Song Can Do. Tomorrow, Lady A unleash the second part of that project, showing their breadth of capabilities and we review What A Song Can Do below.

Since the release of their self-titled debut album, Lady A have been constantly experimenting with the parameters of their sound, from the experimental Heart Break in 2017 to the pop sounds on Need You Now in 2010 to a deep dive into their country roots on Ocean in 2019. What A Song Can Do is a continuation of that rediscovery, placing the lyrics and the art of the song as the core focus, built around their signature, rich harmonies. It’s a tenderly crafted project that charts their journey of rediscovery, digging into their emotional sensibilities in every area of their life, as Kelley himself states, “You rarely learn through the good times. Hardship is where that happens.” It’s clear they spent time finding this place – nearly 60 songs were written for the project, selecting just 14 to showcase – all of which were co-written by at least one member of the trio. There is a sense throughout the record of the quiet joy and contentment the band feel at rediscovering this home, as Scott describes the record, “It was an outlet for us to dream about touring again – and connecting with our fans.”

On the first half of the project that has already been released the band played away with their signature sound, from the lead-out, 80s rock-tinged track ‘Like A Lady’ that was built for live shows rather than studio versions to the heart-wrenchingly nostalgic ‘Things He Handed Down’ to the stunning and clever co-write with Ryan Hurd, ‘What A Song Can Do’ – all which set the stage for a beautifully tender and cohesive collection of songs. That half was rounded out with ‘Worship What I Hate,’ a brutally honest look at who we become if we’re not paying attention, especially in the modern world. ‘Before I really wake up / The first thing I touch is a button on a screen / I’m not guilty of leaving, not sticking around / I’m guilty of staying and just checking out / Yeah, I kept my head down and really missed out / On what’s in front of me.’ The track is led by the vulnerable power of Scott’s vocal as she opines on the state of being present that is a powerful lead into the second half of the album.

The second half of the project is kicked off with ‘Where Would I Be’ that looks at the road not travelled is a heart-swelling ballad about the road that they have travelled as a band, both as artists and individuals. ‘Where would I be without your love / And what would I do if I woke up / One day and found out this was all a dream? / Where would I be without your soul? / Reminding me I’m always home / As long as I can hear your melody.’ It’s a tenderly enacted track, stripped back to showcase the full power of the band’s signature harmonies.

‘Friends Don’t Let Friends’ is a delightful collaboration with Carly Pearce, Thomas Rhett and Darius Rucker – three of the most unique vocalists in country music right now. A country version of ‘With A Little Help From My Friends,’ it’s a grooving, upbeat track about the community of friendship. ‘If you need a wingman / I can hold a cold can / I can pick up the phone man / Won’t let you leave out to dry.’ It’s a track that showcases the magic of Dan Huff’s production as he reinvigorates the band’s signature sound, merging rootsy pop with straight-up country and electrifying harmony in a cohesive and magical mix. More than anything, the track is pure joy – you can tell the artists on the track are celebrating the fact that after lockdown they are able to be in the same room again to unleash their creativity. Elsewhere, the same joyful spirit is brought back on ‘You Keep Thinking That’ that showcases a funkier, more modern sound, amped up by the opening vocoder-lined bars on Scott’s vocal, as she sings to an ex about being over them, despite what they think. ‘I hate to break it to you / But I’ve been seeing someone new / And he ain’t anything like you.’ It’s immensely fun romp, with sonic nods to ‘You Look Good’ but altered for the context of What A Song Can Do that fits seamlessly.

Still the heart-rendering, swelling ballads that are Lady A’s staple are brought in throughout. ‘In Waves’ is a swaying track about the inability to move on. ‘Missing you comes in waves / When the sun goes down on this Gulf coast town, I’m missing you / When the whiskey hits and it burns like this, I’m missing you.’ It’s a soaring, swirling track about heartbreak, whereas ‘Be That For You’ offers a heart-swelling and romantic ballad. ‘If you’re off the tracks and you’ve lost your way / On the days when only grace will do / I’ll be that for you.’ It’s a gloriously tender track, brought to life by stunning production by Dan Huff that enables the track to avoid cliche territory. It’s a classic Lady A track, akin to ‘I Run To You’ – emotionally-laden, rich harmonies, flawlessly delivered. Bringing in a different element to their ‘ballad’ repertoire, ‘Workin’ On This Love’ sees Dave Haywood step up to the mic for his first-ever lead vocal in 15 years. On the track he delivers an acoustic poem, written solo for his wife, Kelli, to honour Mother’s Day, delivered with so much tender emotion that it makes you wonder why he hasn’t taken lead more often. ‘I’ll be a shelter to hold your heart / Taking care of every part / Laying every stone, stronger as it grows / Building up my life, all around you and I.’The project is rounded out with ‘Swore I Was Leaving’ – a soaring ballad that showcases everything that have made Lady A the success they are, rich and tight harmonies, tenderly crafted lyricism and swelling production that allows the vocals to take up centre stage.

What A Song Can Do is a showcase of the power of Lady A as artists and songwriters. It’s clear as Kelley says, “We’ve rediscovered our purpose, and it’s to entertain and spread a positive message…I want our legacy to be songs that make people feel good. …But I also think there’s more to our story that hasn’t been written yet.” It’s a true return to emotional songwriting that was kicked off on Ocean, where the trio have dug into their signature sound and their roots allowing a true sense of contentment to be infused throughout the entire album – a trust in each other and themselves.

Lady A have announced that their eighth studio album – What A Song Can Do – will be released on 22nd October. Fans are able to pre-order the full 14-song collection now here.

Following the release of their new track “Where Would I Be,’ Lady A have announced that their eighth studio album – What A Song Can Do – will be released on 22nd October through BMLG Records. The track continues to demonstrate the new refined vision of the band. On the project the band again worked with producer Dann Huff, the 14 tracks reinvigorate the band’s signature sound – a captivating fusion of rootsy pop and electrifying harmony that has dominated charts for more than a decade. What A Song Can Do is a love letter to fans – steeped in music’s power to get us through. Their new album feels like a reawakening, and to Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott, the road ahead looks better than ever.

“We’ve rediscovered our purpose, and it’s to entertain and spread a positive message – I really truly believe that,” Charles Kelley said. “I want our legacy to be songs that make people feel good. But, I also think there’s more to our story that hasn’t been written yet.”

As their fun-loving lead single “Like a Lady” stresses self-acceptance and female empowerment, “You Keep Thinking That” puts Scott’s sweet yet sassiness on blast, further amplifying her self-made message. Always up for a good time, Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker and tour mate Carly Pearce offer support in the trio’s twang-rocking first true collaboration, “Friends Don’t Let Friends.” Additionally, Haywood steps to the mic for his first-ever lead vocal on the devoted “Working On This Love” as it finds him delivering a tender acoustic poem written solo for his wife, Kelli. The 14-track project ends on a romantic sway with “Swore I Was Leaving,” which was the first song the trio wrote for WHAT A SONG CAN DO. All of it illustrates the patient, gracious optimism the band has taken from their years together.

Fans can listen to the gentle acoustic track “Where Would I Be” that shares how refinement comes in many forms here: https://LA.lnk.to/WWIB_LyricPR

Hillary Scott’s bandmates of Lady A, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, join her for this week’s episode of Country Faith Radio. In the interview, the trio recall writing some early hits, including “I Run To You” and “Hello World,” and discusses how each of their faiths have evolved over the past year. The band also looks back on writing their recent collaboration with Chris Tomlin, “Who You Are To Me.” Additionally, in honour of Charles and Dave joining her, Hillary has each bandmate curate mini-playlists of their favourite country faith songs. Listen to the interview with Lady A in-full anytime on-demand here.
Interview Lady A
Lady A Discusses Writing “I Run To You” and Its Relevance Today
Charles: I remember [Tom Douglas] just had pretty much a basic sketch. And he did have some verse melodies, if I remember (singing) and very poetic words, but he didn’t really have a chorus melody. I mean, I was just going to say that song is more relevant now, especially after what this whole world has gone through with the pandemic. It’s like this world keeps spinning faster into a new disaster. So I mean, leaning on each other, leaning on your faith, leaning on my band mates during this time. So yeah, that song’s pretty special.
Dave: We went over to Tom’s house in Franklin, and gosh, I just love the way he is such a kind of old soul. And he literally writes by hand in a journal and he had all these lyrics of things you run from, pessimist and hate and prejudice and running to someone. I remember he said he got that idea while he was running a marathon, I think. And so he had all these lines, which began… He had basically a poem written out of things you run from and run to.
Hillary Scott Recalls the Unlikely Place Lady A Found Out “I Run To You” Went No. 1
I’ll never forget, we were on the road with Kenny Chesney and we get a call from our manager and our bus had broken down on the side of the road in, out west, somewhere. We were somewhere between like Boise, Idaho, and Oregon or something. And we found out that [“I Run To You”] went number one. And I just, I remember that one being one that we really championed to be a single and I’m really glad we did. And we were all so young, but I think we knew that there was depth to it and wanted the world to hear it. And it’s awesome that it was the first number one we ever had. I feel like it set the tone of the kind of songs we wanted to continue to release out into the world.
Charles Kelley Reflects on Recording “Hello World”
At the time, I guess I was married, but none of us had kids and now, again, I mean, just the way [“Hello World”] hits. I see my wife, a little boy a little girl, hello world and again, it’s just about how distracted we can get. And sometimes it’s something as simple as looking over and seeing something that just reminds you of your faith and reminds you of just the beauty of the world because I think, right now, more than ever it’s like what we call little God winks. And I think that song is funny because at the time, it felt good to me, but I didn’t really resonate as much with the message as I do now.
Charles Kelley Says the Pandemic Made Him Connect More with His Faith
Through the low, my high was I really did connect a lot more to my faith. Through this, I think reading a lot of different things and you really only learn and grow through the lows and the hard times. And it really is true. I mean, when I’m riding high and everything’s good, I’m really not connected to my feelings much. I’m just kind of on the ride, on the rollercoaster ride. And then when you got to sit back and question and do those things, I really think that’s when you start having those conversations with God. And you’re like, “Okay, help me through this. What is this?” And it’s kind of sad that that’s what it is, but it really is true. I mean, I find myself when I really need help that I’m like, “Man, when I don’t need help, I’m just really not that connected to my faith as much.” So that was a high for sure.
Dave Haywood on What He’s Learned About His Faith in the Past Year
I think for me, the sort of theme was just kind of continually like relying and letting go, like you can’t control everything. You know, I wish I was in charge of getting rid of the virus. I wish I could figure all this stuff out, but you just can’t. And so I think that just became sort of smack dab right in front of my face, through the pandemic of like, “All right, I’m definitely not in control of a lot of things, of everything.” So you just kind of get up, have some gratitude and do the best you can every day. So that was pretty the glaring kind of theme for me, it was the forced like “Okay, you’re definitely not in control and you’ve just got to do the best you can and love people as best you can and do what you feel called to do. And stay true to that.”
Charles Kelley Reveals Why He Struggled with His Faith as a Kid
As a kid, I struggled really, really hard with organized religion, and church, and all these. I found it very… Yeah, I don’t know. It was a very disheartening thing, because like, this is a horrible way of looking at it, but as a kid, it was like, I would go to church and then I’d see these kids that were like all really strong faith. Then I’d see them partying and making bad decisions. It made me give this like hypocritical view of that. My wife was like, “That’s human beings.” And it gave me this like weird, flawed view of it. To me, I’ve found that faith for me is just like… He’s in everything, in what we are. I guess that to me is like, I found that I’ve grown stronger in my faith by not putting Him in this box of like, “Okay, well, to believe in God, you got to go to church, you got to do this.” I don’t know if that makes any sense… But I’ve grown a lot of like… I found His presence in kind of, I guess, a little bit of a different journey.
Charles Kelley on Writing “Who You Are To Me” with Chris Tomlin
I remember, because I was like, “Man, am I a fraud coming in here?” Because I was like, “I don’t know all the Bible verses, all these things.” You all grew up so much in that world. And sometimes I feel like a little bit of a fraud in that situation. And I was like, “Well for Him, this is who He is to me.” Like I said, I still struggle with some of the nuances of Christianity and what that is, but I know I have this relationship and I can feel it. And I feel God. And so I’m like, “Well, this is who He is to me.” And then we were off to the races. It was pretty cool to be in that situation and feel like I could kind of kickstart that, even a stronger relationship for me in my journey. Because it really has only been in the past probably two, three years where I really have felt connected to God.

Lady A join Kelleigh Bannen on Today’s Country Radio on Apple Music Country to talk about being nervous about getting back on the road after taking over a year off due to the pandemic. In the interview, Lady A also chat about writing music for and releasing ‘What A Song Can Do (Chapter 1).’ Listen to the full interview with Lady A on-demand here.

Lady A on Being the Soundtrack for People’s Lives
Hillary: I know for me, the most healing, incredible part of music, just in general, is that it can say what I’m feeling better than I can. And I think the songs that really connect with me on a deep level, they can say how I feel better than I can. They help me process my emotions. They help me be fully present in a moment. And I think for me, that would be my hope and intention is that [Lady A] can be that for others. And also equate to fun memories at live shows, or out on the boat with their friends, listening to a really fun uptempo song, or just being a part of people’s lives. The soundtrack, that’s such a common statement to say of being the soundtrack of people’s lives. But for me, being able to help people enter into moments fully.
Lady A on Releasing a Balance of Ballads and Party Songs
Dave: I think we obsess over that, Kelleigh, I mean walking the line of art that really jerks at the soul and really hits you in the heart versus… I mean, sometimes I just put on songs that I love because they just feel good and I want to escape for a minute, roll down the windows and just cruise and just have a great day. I don’t know. We’re very intentional about making sure we have singles that represent both of those things, making sure our albums are well-rounded and they represent both of those things. I mean, playing big shows, knowing people love to crank up the radio, I want to be a part of that story, too, with people.
Lady A on Feeling Nervous to Tour Again After Taking Time Off
Hillary: It feels new again, which is exciting. To be 15 years into this as a band in Nashville and pursuing this career that we love so much, it’s like we’re getting butterflies and we’re getting nervous. And that’s a gift because so much of it-
Charles: It feels good to feel nervous again.
Hillary: Yeah. Yeah.
Dave: Some of that nervousness is good. That’s why I’m excited to tour again. I mean, that moment before you step on stage, kind of being anxious, you want to put on a great show, you want to connect with the fans. Once we hit the stage, I know things will go all away, but I’m definitely feeling a little pre-tour… we are rusty anxiety because we just haven’t stood on a real stage in close to two years, since the last time we really toured, in the summer of 2019. But I think there’s some healthy butterflies, some healthy excitement. Like Hillary was saying, it does kind of feel like you’re starting all over again here, and got to get your sea legs back.
Lady A on “What A Song Can Do”
Hillary: I remember, I listened to the song several times as we were kind of putting the songs together that we were going to record, and on about the fifth or the sixth listen, I was like, “This song is a love letter to our fans.” Yes, there’ve been so many personal instances, I mean, so many markers in my life, memories, moments are songs. I can think about songs and they take me to riding around in the car in high school with my best friend, going to the football game. Like, there’s all of these really specific moments. But to your point exactly, it’s like we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for these songs and the way that everyone in the audience, or everyone streaming, everyone listening, if they had not connected to them. And so I feel like we’ve been very intentional about what we’ve named our albums over the years. But I will say this feels the most like… and maybe it’s just the time, and place and what this past year plus has been, and just the gratitude that we have for what we get to do, but this title and this song in particular, there is no better representation of this music and where we are as a band.

Lady A have today released What A Song Can Do (Chapter One), an artfully and thoughtfully created collection of songs that show the trio’s ability to continue to push their boundaries and continue to release quality material – both sonically and lyrically. For the project, the band spent a year in rediscovery mode, recommitting themselves to their original intention and the result is this newly refined sound. The seven-track ensemble, produced by Dann Huff and with each track penned by at least one member, reinvigorates their signature rich vocal harmony, vivid emotional writing in a smooth fusion of Country, rock and pop. It’s an uplifting project that offers solace and hope.

Of the project Hillary Scott shares, “There’s an interdependence that we have with each other, and music is at the center of that to me… We are all living in the now together…we’re all a work in progress, and that is what we wanted to share with these songs on the first chapter.” What A Song Can Do offers a look at this renewed appreciation for their music and friendship, a refreshingly honest self examination delivered through their tight signature harmonies. The title track – and early highlight track – says it all. Written by Charles Kelley alongside powerhouse songwriters Sam Ellis, Ryan Hurd and Laura Veltz, the trio sing in this charmingly relatable track about the ability of a song to move a listener.

‘It can make you dance and make you cry
Make you wanna give it one more try
Start a band, and kiss that girl
And break some rules
It’ll make you give your heart and get it back
Change your mind just like that
When it’s like every single line was written just for you
Ain’t it crazy what a song can do?’

Indeed, this record has it all – from the first track ‘Talk Of This Town’ and its ability to delve into heartbreak and the difficulty of moving on to ‘Like a Lady’ that is an excuse to dance out the toxins of hardships against women to ‘Things He Handed Down’ that offers a more sentimental look at parenthood and the lessons passed down from father to child to ‘Chance of Rain’ that reminds us not to play it safe in matters of life and love. This project covers huge emotional ground, given additional weight through the trio’s signature harmonies. It’s a weighty and emotionally balanced project. Given that some of their recent hits – ‘What If I Never Get Over You’ and ‘Champagne Night’ – were external cuts, the project is also a firm reminder that the trio are some of the best lyricists out there, accompanied for the creation of the project by some of the biggest names in Nashville songwriting, proving there isn’t an emotion a song can’t make you feel.
