Following a hugely successful 2022, Carly Pearce is looking back at the pain and space in which she wrote her critically acclaimed album – 29: Written in Stone – with a joyful celebration of the record, recorded Live from Music City and featuring some special guests. The live album is out this Friday here.

29: Written in Stone wasn’t just a moment in Carly Pearce’s career, but a kind of resurgence in an old-school country sound. It was a pivotal record that changed Pearce’s career and turned her pain into pure magic. Now, she creates a love letter to that album and to the fans who supported it, with the release of a live album 29: Written In Stone (Live from Music City) that shines a light on her sublime vocals and adds another flavour to the record.

There’s an intimacy provided in a live album that Pearce has really tapped into, and a shared knowledge of just what these songs have meant to her fans has only sought to amp up the emotion with which they are received in their live rendition – the anger is pumped up a notch on ‘Diamondback’ with a thicker, raspier growl added to her vocals, amidst a cacophony of clapping, whereas ’29’ is stripped back, full of vulnerability, as is ‘Should’ve Known Better,’ where the band take a back step to allow the power of her vocal to come to the fore, as they do on the acapella intro on ‘Easy Going.’

Live albums can easily be passed by, but there is something electrifying about them, if given their due and attention, where the crowds and fans who have followed the artist’s career act as another voice on the record. Nowhere is this more evident than on ‘What He Didn’t Do,’ where the audience scream back the line ‘I could run him out of this town,’ with a righteous anger. It shows the lives the album touched and the massive reception to the album of people who related to Pearce’s lyrics.

Given the context in which the album was released and its consequent overwhelmingly positive reception, there is a degree of hope and joy in the live rendition that was backgrounded on the studio version, where Pearce largely bore her pain. ‘Next Girl’ in the live retelling is a riotously fun, honkytonk perfection and ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’ – the gorgeous duet with Lee Brice, sees her find inner peace.

More than anything, this record proves that Pearce is a star – one who is almost better in the raw, unvarnished live retelling than in the more polished studio record. A star who has her audience and fans mesmerised by her vocal and lyrical abilities, as she prepares for the next musical chapter.

Last year was a huge year for Pearce who released her much-lauded current album, 29 : WRITTEN IN STONE (Big Machine Records), topping many end of year ‘best of’ lists. The committed songwriter navigated disappointment, loss and resilience across the 15-track collection in the wake of her divorce and the loss of her producer Busbee – the arc of realising, accepting and moving on wiser for the experience resonated with both fans and music critics alike, bringing back her traditional country roots and musicality in true force. In addition to winning the CMA and ACM Female Vocalist/Artist of the Year Awards, she was nominated for CMA and ACM Album of the Year for 29 : WRITTEN IN STONE. She also took home her second consecutive ACM Music Event of the Year Award for her single “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” with Ashley McBryde.

Carly Pearce joins Hillary Scott on this special Christmas-themed episode of Country Faith Radio. The two catch up about Carly’s recent success and critical acclaim with ’29’ the album, plus they talk about Carly’s recent rendition of “Mary, Did You Know?” and the release of her first Christian song with Matthew West, “Truth Be Told.” Hillary also shares some of her favourite Christmas songs and tells stories of her family’s favorite holiday traditions. Tune in and listen to the episode in-full this Sunday (Dec. 19) at 8am PT / 10am CT / 11am ET or anytime on-demand here.
Carly Pearce on Songwriting for ’29′
I went through a lot of changes in my personal life and also in my musical journey through the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020. I know that we share this, but losing busbee, who produced both of my first two records, I know produced records for you guys [Lady A] and wrote song for you. He was such a big part of my music and just a part of my life that… was taken so suddenly that I didn’t really know what music looked like without him. And then going through a really public divorce, I think I was left almost starting out the project that ended up being this album, ’29.’ I think I was just writing from a place of survival in my heart and not really thinking about, “Well, is this commercial or is this going to be played on the radio or is my record label going to like this?” I think I was just trying to understand what was happening to me in real time.
Carly Pearce on the Moment She Shared with Kelly Clarkson After Singing “29” on The Voice
So I’m sitting as the clocks going down, getting ready to sing this song on one of the biggest television shows, and it was just this whole kind of crazy. I felt like my life flashed before my eyes, a little bit of just, wow, you never know where things are going to take you. And I remember thinking, “I wonder if Kelly is going to really listen to the lyrics of this song, because I felt like there are very few people that have experienced something so public.” Obviously her on a bigger scale than me, but just wondering if she would feel that. And immediately I kind of locked with her a few times and had to kind of look elsewhere because I knew that she felt it and afterwards she got off stage and walked over to me and hugged me and was just like, “Thank you for that.” And she was like, “We need to talk.” And I just… I really appreciated that and felt like she and I knew what the other one felt. And that was a powerful thing that I haven’t quite been able to feel with somebody else that’s experienced it in the public.
Carly Pearce on Her Christmas Traditions with Her Parents
I’m very close to my parents, and I go down to Alabama where they live, and my mom and I, we love to each year, pick a few different, really elaborate Christmas desserts or Christmas cakes that really, we have no business making. We really need Martha Stewart to do it for us, but we take on the task, and it’s so fun, and she’s already sent me pictures of what we’re going to make this year. It looks a little difficult. She’s really feeling confident in our skills, but we just have so much fun doing that together, and watching Christmas movies. And honestly, just being with my parents and seeing them, just with everything that’s happened in the last year, I haven’t seen them that much, but just getting to be with the people that helped make my dreams come true is so fun, and get to just not wear makeup and hang out with the people that you love the most.
Carly Pearce on What Christmas Means to Her as a Christian
It is the celebration of the one constant and consistent love in my life. And to get to celebrate the joy of His birth and the joy, I just get so fulfilled and so full of joy. I mean, joy is just the word that I think of when I think of Christmas and the season and being able to be with the ones that I love so much on this earth and the ones that have instilled that faith in me and just a celebration of His life and that He was made. And just all that encompasses that.

Carly Pearce on Why She Recorded “Mary, Did You Know?”
It’s always been one of my favorite Christmas songs. I think my mom, when I was young, just introduced me to that song and it was one of her favorites. And I think there’s something so haunting about the melody of that song, but also just, like you said, what it speaks to. It’s like, “Mary, do you have any idea how special your son is?” And I think that’s just so what the Christmas spirit and what Christmas is all about is just, “this child that you delivered will soon deliver you”… That’s just, that’s one of my favorite lyrics in the song and it’s just, to me, such a beautiful reminder of his love.
Carly Pearce on Recording “Truth Be Told” with Matthew West
I’ve always wanted to find some sort of collaboration in the Christian world and knew that it would happen at the right time, and I am such a fan of Christian music. And I’ve known Matthew just throughout the years of writing and always been a fan of his, but his team reached out and said that they were wanting to find a country artist that could kind of make his big song “Truth Be Told” into a duet. And I started listening to the lyrics and just laughing because it felt absolutely like God saying to me, “Here you go. This is exactly what you’re living every second right now.” And I just felt so lucky that I got to do that and felt just so grateful to Matthew. And he’s become such a dear friend, he and his wife and their daughters. He’s just such a great person. And more than I even knew, just from listening to his music and my fans, I feel like that didn’t know that song have then turned to that song and loved that song.

The 55th Annual CMA Awards aired last night and announced the 2021 winners. Full details below.

“The 55th Annual CMA Awards” returned to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Shining a light on a community like no other, Country Music’s Biggest Night™ was filled with groundbreaking performances, heartfelt speeches and surprise wins.

Luke Combs, who performed his brand new single “Doin’ This,” received the night’s top honor of CMA Entertainer of the Year, a first for the artist. Sharing that he was at a loss for words, especially after hearing presenter Alan Jackson say his name, twice, Combs acknowledged all of this year’s artists in the category before saying, “I don’t deserve to win it, but I’m sure as hell glad that I did.”

Chris Stapleton was the night’s biggest winner, taking home four wins for CMA Album, Single, Song and Male Vocalist of the Year, while also being recognized for his work as a producer on his album and single. In addition to Stapleton, producer Dave Cobb and mix engineer Vance Powell earned two awards for CMA Album and Single of the Year, while songwriter Mike Henderson earned a trophy for CMA Song of the Year.

Brothers Osborne won CMA Vocal Duo of the Year, as T.J. Osborne graciously took to the stage to proclaim, “It really does feel like love wins tonight.” Jimmie Allen, who performed “Freedom Was a Highway,” received CMA New Artist of the Year, tearfully taking the stage to share that five years ago, he spent his last $100 to purchase a ticket to attend “The 50th Annual CMA Awards,” just to see his hero Charley Pride perform.

In one of the most emotional acceptance speeches of the night, Carly Pearce was brought to tears upon winning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year for the first time, as fellow nominee Ashley McBryde helped her to the stage. Old Dominion continues their reign as CMA Vocal Group of the Year, having now won four years in a row.

Miranda Lambert, the most-nominated female in CMA Awards history, kicked off the night with a career-spanning retrospective of her greatest hits that brought the crowd to their feet as host Luke Bryan took the stage. After greeting his fellow nominees and friends seated at tables in the audience, Bryan was surprised by his “American Idol” co-judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, poking fun at his hosting abilities. Bryan later performed his new single “Up.”

Award-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson captivated the audience with her first-ever CMA Awards performance of “Night Life,” a song originally written and recorded by Willie Nelson and later recorded by Aretha Franklin, followed by a show-stopping surprise duet with Stapleton of “You Are My Sunshine,” the Jimmie Davis-penned classic that both Franklin and Nelson also recorded. Stapleton also performed a stirring rendition of his song “Cold.”

Mickey GuytonBrittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards shared an empowering performance of Guyton’s new song “Love My Hair,” which received a standing ovation. The performance was introduced by 14-year-old activist Faith Fennidy, a young Black girl who, in 2018, left her 6th grade classroom in tears after school officials complained that her hairstyle violated school policy. Fennidy is now an inspiration behind the CROWN Act, created to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles

In one of the night’s most touching moments, Brothers Osborne took the stage to perform “Younger Me,” a reassuring message of hope and strength to the younger version of oneself. Following a cold introduction, T.J. Osborne, who in February of 2021 publicly came out as gay, spoke about watching the CMA Awards for years and thinking how incredible it would be to be on the stage speaking his truth despite feeling that it would never be possible because of his sexuality. “I just wish, I wish my younger me could see me now.”

In true CMA Awards fashion, artists delivered once-in-a-lifetime collaborations throughout the night. Pearce and McBryde performed their heartachingly beautiful duet “Never Wanted to Be That Girl,” while Chris Young and Kane Brown brought the crowd to their feet with their chart-topping, smalltown ode “Famous Friends.” Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood delivered the world television premiere of their recent No. 1 hit “If I Didn’t Love You,” and Dierks Bentley welcomed BRELAND and HARDY on stage for “Beers On Me.”

Keith Urban took to the streets of downtown Nashville, performing his new single “Wild Hearts” while walking down Broadway into Bridgestone Arena. Eric Church brought his nostalgic song “Heart On Fire” to the CMA Awards stage. Blake Shelton performed his new single “Come Back as a Country Boy.” And Zac Brown Band delivered a unifying message with their song “Same Boat.”

Rounding out the evening, Gabby BarrettDan + Shay, Old Dominion, and Thomas Rhett also delivered stellar performances for CMA Awards viewers.

Country artist Russell Dickerson, in partnership with Chevrolet, shared the inspirational story of Sarah Frei before inviting her to join him on stage to honor the CMA Foundation’s 30 Music Teachers of Excellence sitting in the audience. The moving segment brought the room to their feet.

Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde have shared the new female-directed music video for their track – Never Wanted To Be That Girl, ahead of their performance of the song at the CMA Awards on the 10th November.

Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde have shared their intense music video for their track ‘Never Wanted to Be That Girl.’ The pair joined female and first-time director Alexa Campbell to film scenes of their parallel lives out of sync with the wrong guy. Each unassuming woman finds herself in a place she never wanted to be – both suspecting and discovering the truth about a liar. The clips captured just outside of Nashville find the two women visually reflecting as they consider their own blind spots in a painfully sobering moment.

Combining forces with co-producer Shane McAnally, they reignited the ravaged Country tradition of a hard truth cheating song. “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” is sung from the perspective of two women – the single girl thanking the guy who helped change her flat tire and the wife at home – who learn their partner is involved with someone else.

What’s interesting about this song is we could have gone to a place of blame on the others in the love triangle, but we turned it inward. It’s unique that two women who never meet are getting burned by the same man and having the exact same feelings. We intentionally kept the chorus the same to reflect that neither wanted to be in this position,” shares Carly.

Ashley continues, “so many of us know how it is when you go back and start putting all of those pieces together. That moment when you realize the gut punch of the situation. This song isn’t really about being the other woman or even being messed around on as much as it’s about these two people who are exhibiting behaviors they normally wouldn’t – checking text messages, making excuses for why their dates are only on Tuesdays – and realizing it’s all because of the same person.”

The CMA Awards Female Vocalist of the Year nominees will perform “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” on the November 10 live broadcast. The third track from 29: WRITTEN IN STONE, which expands Carly’s original Album of the Year-nominated 29 recording to 15 songs, is climbing through the Top 30 at Country radio in the US with support from Big Machine Records and Warner Music Nashville.

Carly Pearce joins Kelleigh Bannen for an interview on Today’s Country Radio to talk about her new album ’29: Written in Stone.’ Carly shares how her collaboration with Ashley McBryde on “Never Wanted To Be That Girl” challenges the assumption that women in country need to be in competition with one another. Tune in and listen to the interview with Carly Pearce in-full this Friday (Sept. 17) at 5am LA / 7am Nashville / 8am NYC or anytime on-demand here.

Carly Pearce on collaborating with Ashley McBryde

We’ve had a lot of people assume we don’t like each other for no reason other than I think we’re two women kind of “competing for the same things.” I think that was kind of what I was the most excited about was just getting in a room with somebody that I know respects me. I respect her and let’s just see what happens. There wasn’t really any expectation, but I just had that feeling like I knew. I think that what’s so powerful about it is two girls coming together, that we laid our ego down to write something together and that can happen, and I wish that it happened more. I mean, this is the first female female duet that I’ve seen since Carrie and Miranda’s “Somethin’ Bad.”

Carly Pearce on her uncomfortable CMA press roundup

Last year during the CMA nominations, they’d all just come out and I was backstage at the Opry and Luke [Combs] was backstage at the Opry and we were all doing these interviews together, for press and everything, and Gabby Barrett and Ingrid Andress were there and they put us all in different rooms to do Zooms. This particular interviewer did a separate interview with Luke, but he roped Gabby, Ashley [McBryde], myself and Ingrid, all in one interview and then asked us, “Why don’t you think women work on radio?” And I said, “If you guys stop roping us as one person and doing these cattle call interviews and look at us as individuals, maybe it would go away.”

Over the past year, Carly Pearce has dug deep into the pain of her past few years, including her divorce from Michael Ray, losing her producer Busbee all set against the background of the pandemic. This Friday, Carly Pearce will release her third full-length studio album – 29: Written in Stone – that is our front-runner for Album of the Year, a masterfully written and delivered record that showcases an artist of timeless appeal. Here, we review the record and outline our thoughts.

Something has well and truly clicked for Carly Pearce over the past year. Somehow, having lost her producer Busbee and going through a highly publicised divorce from husband Michael Ray, Pearce has channelled that pain, loss and heartbreak into one of the most artfully, thoughtfully considered love letters to country music that we have possibly ever heard. To say this is an album of the year doesn’t feel like it does the record justice, this is a record to live with for a lifetime, one of enduring, staying power past the twenty-first century – 29: Written in Stone – is a masterpiece positing Carly Pearce as a future icon and legend in the genre.

The record opens with the fun and sassy ‘Diamondback’ in which Pearce sticks it to her ex with a humoured, sassy and immensely fun revenge track. ‘Keep the house, keep the truck / Go downtown get too drunk / Kiss a one-night stand with a butterfly on her back.’ Written with Kelsea Ballerini, Tofer Brown and Shane McAnally, it’s the most ‘fun’ track that we have heard from Pearce since ‘Next Girl’ delivered with ease and couched in gorgeously nostalgic country production. Pearce continues to see the light side of heartbreak on later track ‘Next Girl’ – the first track released from the record, a delightful, romping letter to the ‘Next Girl.’

On the flip side, ‘What He Didn’t Do’ is one of the most graceful and dignified songs from a wronged woman that we have ever heard. ‘Imma take the high road / Even though we both know, I could run him out of this town / That’s just dirty laundry, I don’t need to air the truth.’ This track became a fast fan favourite when Pearce sang the track at the Listening Room in Nashville and MacAnally’s production is a masterclass, polishing the perfection of Pearce’s vocal and lyrics and allowing them to speak for themselves, rather than transforming it. ‘Easy Going’ continues to imbue a fervent bluegrass feel to the record.  ‘Roses hide thorns and devils hide horns, guess I finally saw yours.’ The track continues the country trope of a wronged woman, fusing the sound of 90s country and keeping it current, an easy and fresh classic. The outdo for ‘Easy Going’ is a mark of genius itself, huge credit to Shane MacAnally for some of his best work of recent years. Similarly, ‘Your Drinkin’, My Problem’ is another track that feels infused with the power of the great 90s female country artists where Pearce sings about a drinking problem becoming her ‘problem.’ ‘Your whiskey, my headache / Your good time, my heartbreak / I’m stone cold sober, waking up hungover.’ The lyrics are relatable and raw, yet couched in an immensely catchy and free-flowing production.

It is this production that has somehow enabled Pearce to hit new heights in the ’29’ era, setting its foundations in her bluegrass roots. The bluegrass feel reaches it’s peak on ‘Dear Miss Loretta,’ with Pearce teaming up with Patty Loveless herself, on a love letter to country music itself. ‘Dear Miss Loretta, I ain’t ever met ya / But I’m lonely tonight and I just bet ya / Might have some wisdom to pull off that shelf. / Your songs were all fun / til I lived them myself.’ Both artists signature vocals meld together in a deliciously slow-burning track, anchored in meaty country production – fiddle, dobro, piano and electric guitar – drawing out the very soul of her pain. It’s these kinds of power that show how Pearce has transformed in the past few years – it’s a far cry from chasing after country radio play, yet it is this very fact that gives the track its power and appeal. It’s clear that Pearce has thought long and hard about the shrewd choice for the collaborations on the record – the only other with Ashley McBryde on ‘Never Wanted to Be That Girl.’ A stunningly regretful track imbued with an immensity of raw emotion, showcasing two artists in full command of their own artistry and vision as they sing about mistakenly filling the role of the ‘other girl.’ ‘I never wanted to be that girl / I never wanted to hate myself / I thought this kind of lonely, only happens to somebody else / Being the other one, when there’s another one / God this feels like hell.’ The dobro backdrop ekes out the visceral emotion of both vocals.

By the end of the record, Pearce has reached a level of closure and hope. On ‘All The Whiskey,’ the production is stripped back to reveal the naked power of Pearce’s vocal. ‘All the whiskey in the world / Won’t burn out my memory / I’ll be right back on your mind, when the morning sun comes up.’ There is a sense on this more muted track that Pearce has reached her own closure, moving to a place of acceptance for the pain of all she has endured. This sentiment is carried through onto ‘I Want To Mean It This Time,’ where she reaches a sense of hope, working at getting to a place of peace. ‘When I say forever, I’m going to write it in stone / 100 years wouldn’t be enough, it will never get old / And when I give my heart away and lay it all on the line / When I tell the world I’m yours and baby you’re mine / I want to mean it this time.’ It’s a beautifully, quietly hopeful track that means so much more given the weight of the record that has preceded it.

Pearce has transformed heartbreak and pain into a truly miraculous record, with the help of some of the best songwriters in the business. Every note on the album is a masterstroke, down to the sequencing itself, weaving newcomers like ‘All The Whiskey’ and ‘Your Drinkin’, My Problem’ next to already released tracks like ’29’ and ‘Next Girl.’ Something has been unleashed in Pearce in this ’29’ era and the world needs to watch out, she is unstoppable, with every track released a jewel brighter than the last.
