Luke Combs pairs his album release from last year – Growing Up – with its sister record – Getting Old – out everywhere today, that continues to showcase his masterful songwriting chops.

The rise of Luke Combs over the past few years, from his debut album to winning CMA Entertainer of the Year, has been unprecedented. He has put a voice to the humble thoughts and everyday struggles of all country music fans, leading a new charge of songwriters and artists who dig back into their origin stories and stories from their hometowns for inspiration, delivering a no-nonsense sound that feels gritty and authentic.

Now, Combs has returned with his fourth studio album – the sister record to his third album Growin’ Up that felt somewhat underwhelming, in comparison to the staggering power of his first two records. There was a degree of trepidation then when awaiting Gettin’ Old, but that feeling was unfounded that is filled with the killer songwriting we received with his debut record, with a layer of maturity that feels right considering the new stage Combs is now at in his life – as a father and husband. There’s plenty of material here that takes fans on the journey of Combs life, entering this new stage, as he explores the bonds of fatherhood and brotherhood on ‘See Me Now’ and ‘Take You With Me.’ Of course, Combs continues to revisit the stories of his childhood on ‘Hannah Ford Road’ and celebrate the blue-collar, regular man on ‘Joe.’

More than anything, this record is filled with killer storytelling songwriting, it’s classic Combs in sound, but with a newer mature sound and lyrical touch, filled with huge hits that do not feel inauthentic in reaching for the #1 spot. Gettin’ Old is a showcase in painting a picture of an artist and where they are currently at in their life and shows just why Combs star continues to shine so brightly.

The 55th Annual CMA Awards aired last night and announced the 2021 winners. Full details below.

“The 55th Annual CMA Awards” returned to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Shining a light on a community like no other, Country Music’s Biggest Night™ was filled with groundbreaking performances, heartfelt speeches and surprise wins.

Luke Combs, who performed his brand new single “Doin’ This,” received the night’s top honor of CMA Entertainer of the Year, a first for the artist. Sharing that he was at a loss for words, especially after hearing presenter Alan Jackson say his name, twice, Combs acknowledged all of this year’s artists in the category before saying, “I don’t deserve to win it, but I’m sure as hell glad that I did.”

Chris Stapleton was the night’s biggest winner, taking home four wins for CMA Album, Single, Song and Male Vocalist of the Year, while also being recognized for his work as a producer on his album and single. In addition to Stapleton, producer Dave Cobb and mix engineer Vance Powell earned two awards for CMA Album and Single of the Year, while songwriter Mike Henderson earned a trophy for CMA Song of the Year.

Brothers Osborne won CMA Vocal Duo of the Year, as T.J. Osborne graciously took to the stage to proclaim, “It really does feel like love wins tonight.” Jimmie Allen, who performed “Freedom Was a Highway,” received CMA New Artist of the Year, tearfully taking the stage to share that five years ago, he spent his last $100 to purchase a ticket to attend “The 50th Annual CMA Awards,” just to see his hero Charley Pride perform.

In one of the most emotional acceptance speeches of the night, Carly Pearce was brought to tears upon winning CMA Female Vocalist of the Year for the first time, as fellow nominee Ashley McBryde helped her to the stage. Old Dominion continues their reign as CMA Vocal Group of the Year, having now won four years in a row.

Miranda Lambert, the most-nominated female in CMA Awards history, kicked off the night with a career-spanning retrospective of her greatest hits that brought the crowd to their feet as host Luke Bryan took the stage. After greeting his fellow nominees and friends seated at tables in the audience, Bryan was surprised by his “American Idol” co-judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, poking fun at his hosting abilities. Bryan later performed his new single “Up.”

Award-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson captivated the audience with her first-ever CMA Awards performance of “Night Life,” a song originally written and recorded by Willie Nelson and later recorded by Aretha Franklin, followed by a show-stopping surprise duet with Stapleton of “You Are My Sunshine,” the Jimmie Davis-penned classic that both Franklin and Nelson also recorded. Stapleton also performed a stirring rendition of his song “Cold.”

Mickey GuytonBrittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards shared an empowering performance of Guyton’s new song “Love My Hair,” which received a standing ovation. The performance was introduced by 14-year-old activist Faith Fennidy, a young Black girl who, in 2018, left her 6th grade classroom in tears after school officials complained that her hairstyle violated school policy. Fennidy is now an inspiration behind the CROWN Act, created to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles

In one of the night’s most touching moments, Brothers Osborne took the stage to perform “Younger Me,” a reassuring message of hope and strength to the younger version of oneself. Following a cold introduction, T.J. Osborne, who in February of 2021 publicly came out as gay, spoke about watching the CMA Awards for years and thinking how incredible it would be to be on the stage speaking his truth despite feeling that it would never be possible because of his sexuality. “I just wish, I wish my younger me could see me now.”

In true CMA Awards fashion, artists delivered once-in-a-lifetime collaborations throughout the night. Pearce and McBryde performed their heartachingly beautiful duet “Never Wanted to Be That Girl,” while Chris Young and Kane Brown brought the crowd to their feet with their chart-topping, smalltown ode “Famous Friends.” Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood delivered the world television premiere of their recent No. 1 hit “If I Didn’t Love You,” and Dierks Bentley welcomed BRELAND and HARDY on stage for “Beers On Me.”

Keith Urban took to the streets of downtown Nashville, performing his new single “Wild Hearts” while walking down Broadway into Bridgestone Arena. Eric Church brought his nostalgic song “Heart On Fire” to the CMA Awards stage. Blake Shelton performed his new single “Come Back as a Country Boy.” And Zac Brown Band delivered a unifying message with their song “Same Boat.”

Rounding out the evening, Gabby BarrettDan + Shay, Old Dominion, and Thomas Rhett also delivered stellar performances for CMA Awards viewers.

Country artist Russell Dickerson, in partnership with Chevrolet, shared the inspirational story of Sarah Frei before inviting her to join him on stage to honor the CMA Foundation’s 30 Music Teachers of Excellence sitting in the audience. The moving segment brought the room to their feet.

Ray Fulcher has made a name for himself, having co-written some major hits with Luke Combs. He is crafting his own path out in the genre, with his raw and gritty songs about real life. Ahead of his Opry debut this week and the release of three new tracks, we interview Ray about his journey so far.

Ray Fulcher

What a huge week for you, with the Opry, the singles coming out! It must be a lot to take in – how are you feeling about it?

It is, I was telling somebody last night, ‘It’s here, it’s the week. There’s a lot of stuff happening – music coming out, we have our first event with my mental health awareness foundation on Wednesday, and then the music and the Opry on Friday. Then, of course, I have people coming in from out of town, so it’s a whole lot, but it’s great.

It’s kind of the culmination of the dream. Everyone always sees the success, but they haven’t seen the years of work to get to where you are now – the years of grafting.

They always say it takes 10 years to make an overnight success.

I mean, the singles, I love them, I think they’re great. You’ve always shown in your music and your songwriting that real life. Is that something that’s always been really important to you?

Yeah, I mean with ‘Girl In It,’ it’s kind of the reasons I love that one so much. It’s  just the human condition in one song – the falling in love, the being in love, but then also the heartbreak, which most people are going to experience over the course of their life – all that stuff and finding a way to wrap those emotions into one song. We started that song with that in mind. I’m really proud of that one, because it’s just honest – you’re going to fall in love, you’re going to be in love and there’s probably gonna be a time where you’re going to mess things up and that’s okay because we all do.

These songs to portray the whole spectrum of life, you’ve got ‘Way Out’ which is very different from ‘Girl In It’ which is different from ‘Bucket List Beers.’ The last one resonated so much, because we’ve all had moments over the past year where we’ve felt like we’re missing out on those moments. I think that one has so much emotional resonance to it.

Right! Because we got those taken away from us for a while. With ‘Way Out,’ I remember that push-pull feeling, I’ve kind of been around the country and stuff and now when I look back at my hometown, it’s become a little more romanticised than it was before. I’ve always loved my hometown, but now I realise more than ever that it’s a really special place to me. I always wanted to write a song about that push-pull feeling – it being a special place but still need to go. The hook really comes from when I was on my way to Nashville to move, I remember being like, ‘what am I doing? I’m leaving a comfortable life and have it all set up back home. Why would I ever want a way out of there?’ In that case, I’m glad I kept driving to Nashville, but that’s kind of where that comes from.

For these songs, I know you’ve worked again with Jonathan Singleton, who you’ve worked with in the past. Can you talk about how that partnership evolved and what he has meant for your music?

It’s been invaluable. So Jonathan, I met him when I first moved to town and there was a song that was on the radio when I first moved called ‘Diamond Rings and Ole Barstools’ that I absolutely loved and he wrote that one. So, I started digging into what he had done and he wrote so many songs that I love, like ‘Why Don’t We Just Dance’ and ‘All The Way Down The Line.’  Every time I saw him play live, at all these writers’ rounds, I was like, ‘my gosh, this guy’s an absolute badass’. So, I got to meet him through Luke Combs and then we started writing songs together. I really just love his vibe and love being around him.

One day, I just said, ‘hey, what if we just work some songs for me? You know, what if you produce?’ And he’s like, ‘I’m gonna wait on you to ask me that’. We started the partnership that way, but my gosh watching his mind in the studio, he gets that kind of grit of the songs – he’s from West Tennessee – and he brings a little bit of that West Tennessee Memphis thing, where there’s always something moving in the song, even if it’s in the background. He has a lot of soul in his playing and what needs to be done in the song, he’s really one of the best – if not the best – when it comes to that kind of stuff. The songs would definitely not sound the way they do, track wise and feel wise if it wasn’t for him.

Obviously someone else who’s been instrumental in your career has been Luke Combs. How important was it for both of you to form this partnership where you wrote the songs that you wanted to create and this sound that wasn’t there before?

For us, when we came to town, we didn’t have anything going on and we were writing a lot together and we were talking about how we don’t know what Nashville really wants to hear and what sound we’re supposed to chase – that’s so exhausting. So, we thought why don’t we just write songs that we’re just going to love and be proud of, and do our own thing and then see where that lands us? On his side first, it happened to be the songs that everybody had been wanting to hear – that first record broke so many records and then the second one did the same. It’s all the same kind of sound and what was important for me is finding a way to still write those same type of songs that said things in the same sort of way, but sounded different sonically from what Luke’s been doing. These first three sound very different, though the authentic message is the same.

Well your vocals are so different. I mean the heart is the same, talking about real things and real people but your vocals are so different. I also wanted to talk to you about your Pretty Good Ball Fund – you’ve got stuff going on this week with it, can you talk a bit about it and how people can get involved?

So, Pretty Good Ball started as an idea for me, I knew I wanted to start some sort of charity foundation – I didn’t know what that would be, but back in the fall, I just hadn’t had time to come reflect and all during the pandemic. I was looking back and thinking about what are some of the things I can do for myself that I had done before. I had talked to some people about therapy, and for me, it was just like,  let me learn about myself a little bit more and how can I better myself and learn some things about me that maybe have been holding me back in relationships and everything. That was so helpful for me, but we moved into this next chapter talking about a charity and I  told my manager Neil. I just got thinking about how hard this town is and there’s a lot of people – musicians and songwriters and stuff – who even if they’ve needed therapy, or are going through something or whatever, they don’t go, maybe because they can’t afford it. So,  one half of the fund is a fundraising thing for that, but the bigger part is being just the normal guy in town who hopefully helps break the stigma and makes it okay to talk about the fact that it’s okay to not be okay. When something’s wrong with your car, you take it to the mechanic, people aren’t any different and so, it’s getting that conversation out there and making it okay to talk about it. Hopefully, people think ‘Ray’s just a good old boy like us, if he’s okay talking about it, if he’s been in therapy, then if I’m feeling some type of way, it’s okay too.’ This is coming from a guy who didn’t know about mental health at all. I got myself through with willpower and then next thing, you’re still feeling the same way six months later. So, hopefully just making the conversation more okay to be had and breaking the stigma, but also we team with Musicians Health Alliance and they have the infrastructure to put any funds that we raise into place and so people can apply for help and stuff, and then they can help get you started in therapy and give you someone to talk to anonymously. I think that it gives people a real tangible outlet and helps continue the conversation.

I think it’s amazing what you guys are doing, so thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today and good luck with this epic week you’ve got ahead!

Thank you for having me.

Columbia Nashville/River House Artists breakout singer-songwriter Jameson Rodgers has today released his new EP – In It For the Money, fresh off his nomination for best new country artist at the 2021 iHeart Radio Music Awards. Here, we review the new EP by Jameson Rodgers – stream the new EP here.

Jameson Rodgers

Since the release of his breakout hit, ‘Some Girls,’ Jameson Rodgers has been a hot name on everyone’s lips, waiting for an extended project from the phenomenal singer-songwriter who has made a name for himself creating a commercial country sound that manages to bridge the gap between bro and boyfriend country, creating a slick sound that feels very current, yet unique. Underneath it all, Rodgers creates tracks with an authenticity that is immensely humility, not veering away from the more everyday topics, like on ‘Good Dogs.’ His new EP – In It For the Money – released today, showcases all that humility and polish that we have come to expect from Rodgers, highlighting his diversity as a songwriter and artist.

The project begins with the bombastic party song, ‘Cold Beer Calling My Name,’ on which he is joined by his label mate Luke Combs. It takes some guts to go up one of the biggest vocalists in country music right now, but Rodgers more than holds his own on this blisteringly fun and boisterous track. ‘There’s a pocket full of pay day green / And my baby putting sugar on me.‘ It’s a blue-collar celebration of the end of the working day and sets the bar high sonically for the rest of the project. Next, Rodgers dives into his major hit ‘Some Girls’ that takes the pace back a step. It’s a pensive track about the human experience in all its forms and emotions. ‘Some hearts stay broke / Some hearts don’t skip a beat / Some people say goodbye then try to make it alright / Just like you’re doin’ to me.’ It’s a moving track but devoid of cloying sentimentality, making it strike home yet more, and an idea he explores again in ‘Desert’ – a meandering track about the journey of life in all its forms, led by the refrain – ‘Life’s kinda crazy, can’t predict the weather, but the cold and the rain and the pain don’t last forever.’

Continuing his authentic songwriting, ‘In It For the Money’ is one of the most honest tracks we’ve heard of the artist experience. ‘If I was in it for the money, I’d have quit a long time ago.’ It’s a real take on the difficulties of grafting as an artist over the year, sonically experimental in the outdo thanks to the aid of a vocoder, it is everything a country song should be – honest and real, and incredibly human.

The bombastic sound we were introduced to on ‘Cold Beer Calling My Name’ is reintroduced on ‘Rolling Rock, Rolling Stones,’ a heavier head-banging track about living a freer life. ‘I love to dance with honky tonk women, hey hey na na, I love the taste of the suds I’m sipping.’ It’s a foot-stomping and catchy track that will be a sure fire hit in its live retelling, before Rodgers takes the pace back down a notch for his final two tracks. ‘When You Think of Mississippi’ is the most sentimental moment on the EP, a nostalgic track looking back on a relationship. ‘Do you ever miss me, when you think of Mississippi.’ It’s a trip back down memory lane and is immensely poignant – allowing Rodgers to showcase the nuances of his vocal. The project rounds out with the most humble track – ‘Good Dogs’ – a song about losing his beloved pet. ‘Good dogs, don’t live long enough.’ It underlines yet again the authenticity and humility of Rodgers as an artist just stepping into his confidence and stride. It’s an immensely rounded project, full of big stadium-ready tracks as much with poignant writers round ‘moments’ that will make audiences fall for Rodgers – this is an artist that you should bet your money on right now.

As we count down to the 2020 CMA Awards hosted by Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker – we’re laying out our CMA Award predictions. Let us know whether you agree or vehemently disagree…

CMA Awards 2020

This year, will doubtless be a CMA Awards like no other, as Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker host the show live from Nashville on the 11th November on ABC. Here, we break down our predictions and thoughts.

Entertainer of the Year

For the first time ever, two women are nominated for this year’s Entertainer of the Year Award, and after Carrie’s snub last year in favour of Garth Brooks, we’d love for this to go as a joint award. However, given the huge, record-breaking year that Luke Combs has had this year, it seems a foregone and well-deserved conclusion that he may just pip this one.

Eric Church

Luke Combs

Miranda Lambert

Carrie Underwood

Keith Urban

Single of the Year

There’s been a huge amount of buzz around Miranda Lambert’s ‘Bluebird,’ however if radio success is anything to go by, Maren Morris’ ‘The Bones’ seems to have all roads leading to it winning this award this year.

“10,000 Hours,” Dan + Shay (with Justin Bieber); Dan Smyers, producer

“Beer Never Broke My Heart,” Luke Combs; Scott Moffatt, producer

“Bluebird,” Miranda Lambert; Jay Joyce, producer

“The Bones,” Maren Morris; Greg Kurstin, producer

“I Hope,” Gabby Barrett; Ross Cooperman, Zach Kale, producers

Album of the Year

This is a h-u-g-e year for records, with every album nominated in this category being a flawless, authentic and diverse approach to country music. Yet, again, given the success and the hype around his record that seems to have booted his career into the stratosphere, we’re putting our money again behind Luke Combs to win this award.

Heartache Medication, Jon Pardi; Bart Butler, Ryan Gore, Jon Pardi, producers

Never Will, Ashley McBryde; Jay Joyce, John Peets, producers

Old Dominion, Old Dominion; Shane McAnally, Old Dominion, producers

What You See Is What You Get, Luke Combs; Scott Moffatt, producers

Wildcard, Miranda Lambert; Jay Joyce, producer

Song of the Year

Some of our favourite tracks from this year have made it onto this list, but given the fandom behind it and the buzz – and those damn vocals – we’re putting our money behind Carly Pearce’s track ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’ that became a #1 hit.

“Bluebird” (Luke Dick, Natalie Hemby, Miranda Lambert)

“The Bones” (Maren Morris, Jimmy Robbins, Laura Veltz)

“Even Though I’m Leaving” (Luke Combs, Wyatt B. Durrette III, Ray Fulcher)

“I Hope You’re Happy Now” (Luke Combs, Randy Montana, Carly Pearce, Jonathan Singleton)

“More Hearts Than Mine” (Ingrid Andress, Sam Ellis, Derrick Southerland)

Female Vocalist of the Year

This one always seems a tight run, but on vocals alone, Carrie takes our prize.

Miranda Lambert

Ashley McBryde

Maren Morris

Kacey Musgraves

Carrie Underwood

Male Vocalist of the Year

Do we sound like a broken record yet? Luke Combs again takes our bet.

Eric Church

Luke Combs

Thomas Rhett

Chris Stapleton

Keith Urban

Vocal Group of the Year

Lady A

Little Big Town

Midland

Old Dominion

Rascal Flatts

Vocal Duo of the Year

Brooks & Dunn

Brothers Osborne

Dan + Shay

Florida Georgia Line

Maddie & Tae

Musical Event of the Year

“10,000 Hours,” Dan + Shay (with Justin Bieber); Dan Smyers, producer

“Be a Light,” Thomas Rhett featuring Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, Keith Urban; Dann Huff, producer

“The Bones,” Maren Morris with Hozier; Greg Kurstin, producer

“Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” Miranda Lambert (feat. Maren Morris, Elle King, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes & Caylee Hammack); Jay Joyce, producer

“I Hope You’re Happy Now,” Carly Pearce and Lee Brice; busbee, producer

New Artist of the Year

Morgan Wallen may have taken our bet, but given all the controversy around his name of late, Pearce takes our vote.

Jimmie Allen

Ingrid Andress

Gabby Barrett

Carly Pearce

Morgan Wallen
