Three years – and a lot of controversy – on from his second album Dangerous, Morgan Wallen is back with his third album, a whopping 36 song strong behemoth – One Thing At A Time. Stream the album here.

You can’t avoid approaching Morgan Wallen’s new album One Thing at a Time with a degree of trepidation – and not just for his mighty length at 36 songs. Wallen is without a doubt one of the most controversial figures in country music. After a slew of scandals, most notably a 2021 video where he was caught making a racial slur, and a short hiatus where he withdrew from the scene, Wallen returned to music on an apology tour. Since then, he has been welcomed back – a point that remains uncomfortable, given the history of the genre and its reputation for lacking racial and sexual diversity. Wallen’s 2021 album though became the first album ever to spend 100 weeks in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and Wallen’s popularity continues to rise and rise, with No. 1s earned from the early releases from this record – ‘You Proof’ and ‘Last Night.’

It is through this lens and recognition of his own mistakes and failings, that Wallen approaches his new record One Thing At A Time and it is necessary, it would feel like a massive overstep to forgive himself and move on as if nothing happened. One Thing At A Time is a behemoth – at 36 songs, there’s doubtless some editing that could have been done in terms of culling songs as, no doubt, the record lags at points. Though there is not a huge amount of ‘filler’ material it is just too long an album to imbibe in one sitting or to fully unpack.

Easy highlights are found early on with ‘Man Made a Bar’ – a collaboration with Eric Church, where Wallen adds a few events to the story of creation and on ‘Tennessee Numbers’ where he sings of a girl avoiding his calls in a bid to move on. What is clear from the record is Wallen’s ability to craft a hit track – there is a plethora of material here that could be released as a future single, from ‘I Wrote The Book’ to ‘Single Than She Was’ and ‘Sunrise.’ From, swaggering bro country sounds that wouldn’t sound alien to the early 00s to songs that bring back his Allman Brothers 60s influences, Wallen straddles the legacy of the genre with ease, fusing it into huge tracks and melodies.

Sonically, the record is not a huge departure from his previous material. Wallen has just taken the time to dig deeper with his lyricism and songwriting and to dig in deeper to his own psyche, owning the regrets of his past, most notably on ‘Dying Man.’ It is this new-found maturity and his ability to own his flaws that makes this record a departure from Dangerous and makes it more palatable as a record. For fans of Wallen the record will be a surefire hit and go down seamlessly, no doubt country radio will pick up many of the tracks that will go on to become future no. 1s. If you want to get to the heart of Wallen, One Thing at a Time is a good place to start.

Nashville hitmaker Ernest has released his new track ‘Flower Shops’ featuring Morgan Wallen. Listen here.

Multi-Platinum artist and songwriter Ernest is kicking off the New Year with the beautiful, fan-favourite track ‘Flower Shops (feat. Morgan Wallen). The track has already hit the #1 spot on Apple Music Country, Spotify Country, and iTunes overall upon release. On the track, Ernest describes the pain of a breakup, in a classic done-her-wrong ballad, with gorgeous, swelling traditional country production, complete with weeping steel guitar and a slow-and-sorry beat. The melancholic track was written by ERNEST with Ben Burgess and Mark Holman and produced by Joey Moi.

Of the track Ernest says, “’Flower Shops’ is a song that isn’t over-written or over-complicated… It’s a sad song with a wink; an honest song about messing up a good thing and running out of sorrys. I wrote it with Ben Burgess and Mark Holman after being on a George Jones/sad Country song kick. I didn’t have a hard time going there because I know damn well what it’s like to run out of apologies, and though flowers aren’t ever going to fix it, it’s just about all you can do sometimes. It’s one of my favorite songs, if not my favorite song, I’ve written to date. The response on social media and from fans has been incredible, especially for being an unreleased song up until now. I’m excited for it to be out in the world and even more excited to have one of my best friends, Morgan, hop on it and sing it with me. I am a big believer in Country music remaining honest, regardless of sonics. And this is as honest as it can get.”
The track is a powerful start to 2022, ahead of Ernest’s Grand Ole Opry debut on 8th January and his support slot for Chris Lane on his Fill Them Boots tour.

Morgan Wallen’s star has been rising incredibly quickly over the past few months – winning the CMA for New Artist of the Year and releasing his acclaimed sophomore album Dangerous – but now, as news has spread of the emergence of a video in which he utters a racist slur, Nashville’s doors are quickly closing against him. Is this the end for Morgan Wallen?

Morgan Wallen

2020 seemed set to be Morgan Wallen’s year, after the success of his single ‘7 Summers’ and ‘More Than My Hometown,’ a date was set for the release of his double album Dangerous in January and a slot was booked for SNL. However, in the summer he made headlines when news emerged of him partying with college girls – as the pandemic raged – not adhering to any safety guidelines. After withdrawing from the spotlight for a few months, he made his comeback and made his way back onto SNL (not without jokes being made at his expense) and this January saw the release of his record that shot to the #1 slot on the Billboard chart – the first to do so for three weeks since Taylor Swift’s Red in 2012. Today, however, news emerged of a video in which Wallen utters a racist slur. As a result of which, Wallen’s music has been removed from more than 400 US radio playlists, Spotify’s Hot Country and Apple Music’s Today’s Country and his music has been removed from CMT amongst other outlets, as media hastens to reassure their fans that they neither tolerate nor condone anyone shown to be holding values counter to their own values. Though the singer has issued a statement apologising and saying ‘I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back,’ his contract with his label has been suspended indefinitely. After the mammoth success of Dangerous, it remains to be seen whether Wallen will manage to worm himself back into Nashville’s good graces or whether those doors are shut for good. If the views of his fellow artists are anything to go by, it seems unlikely, with Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini and more drawing the line between themselves and Wallen, with Morris stating before the news from Wallen’s record label ‘Big Loud’ broke that ‘we’d be dropped, endorsements lost, social pariahs to music row..,’ echoing views circulating that had Wallen been a woman he would have already been dropped long ago. Where country music has been doing its utmost to prove internationally that it has progressed beyond the white male-dominated genre it has always been known as, this is the moment where Nashville has taken an overt stand to draw a hard line between the past and future, and it is hopeful that this is not a change for the moment but for the long-haul. If Wallen is to have a career after the backlash against him has died down in the media, then he is going to have to do a serious PR campaign, showing his growth in order to be a representative for the genre both nationally and internationally. It is only by doing this that he will be able to begin to show that he has changed sufficiently to meet the country music genre as it is today, rather than what it used to represent.

Today, there were two stories coming out of Nashville, one about love and one about hate. In a hell-raiser of a last 12 months, we want to focus on the former – TJ Osborne coming out as the only openly gay artist to be signed to a major country label, as he revealed to Time Magazine

TJ Osborne
Kristine Potter for TIME

The spotlight was on Nashville today – one with a story about hate, as Morgan Wallen was suspended indefinitely from his record label amidst the circulation of a video in which he utters a racist slur -and one of love, with TJ Osborne coming out as gay, telling his story exclusively to Time Magazine. What is incredible is that, even in 2021, this is still a momentous event, but momentous it is. TJ’s announcement means that he is the only openly gay artist to be signed to a major country label. Sharing the news on his own social, TJ shares, ‘This story always seemed too mountainous to tell but now that it’s been told I am at a loss for words as to how clear the path was all along. Thanks to all of the pillars of people I have in my life and thanks to @samlansky and @time for carrying me across the finish line. #proud #pride#3chordsandthetruth.’

The status of the duo – having won four CMAs, seven Grammy nominations – will hopefully pave a path for a new day for the genre, one that is more open and beckoning in a new legion of country artists, such as Cameron Hawthorn and indeed, success on radio for the likes of Brandy Clark and Brandi Carlile. TJ’s announcement will be an example to a new generation of country fans worldwide. As TJ himself says to TIME, ‘I’m very comfortable being gay…I find myself being guarded for not wanting to talk about something that I personally don’t have a problem with. That feels so strange.’ For a genre that has been almost exclusively filled with white and straight singers, it is a pivotal moment for the country industry and fans to get behind and the outpouring of love from the country industry toward TJ feels like a far cry from the response to Chely Wright’s public announcement in 2010 when she came out (the response to which has been shown in her documentary Wish Me Away). However, while Nashville has changed, it remains to be seen whether the country fans (largely in conservative States) will similarly get behind the duo – the shadow of the fall of The Chicks and Wright’s career still looms large, but this is a vital step in the right direction of remoulding the genre.

It is important to note that the news came out on a day when Morgan Wallen has been dropped by his label and removed from more than 400 US radio playlists, following the emergence of a video in which he uses a racial slur. The almost unanimous outcry against Wallen’s comments are hopefully further proof that Nashville – a city in a state that continues to have problems with racism – is changing and finally broadening the demographic of its’ artists.

Is Nashville finally ready for change? It seems so, we just hope the bastions of country music fans get behind TJ in the same way that his fellow artists have.

We round up your weekly country music news from the first full week of 2021, including the cancellation of the GRAMMYs awards – and uncover the moments that you might have missed. This country music news will also be available on the podcast tomorrow on Spotify and on iTunes.

1. Walmart leaks Morgan Wallen’s record ahead of release

Morgan Wallen is not someone who will shy away from an issue or keep quiet. So, when Walmart leaked copies of his records around the country, he took to socials, sharing – ‘Hey y’all, it’s been brought to my attention that some of my music—well, my album—has leaked at some Walmarts around the country. I don’t know how that’s possible, but it has…I’ll be damned if I let Walmart do the leaking.” So, he began to leak the record on his own stories. We’re betting it hasn’t been a good start to 2021 for some Walmart employees.

2. The GRAMMYs Awards originally set for January 31st 2021 have been postponed

On a statement on their website, the awards show stated, ‘After thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear, we are rescheduling the 63rd annual Grammy Awards… The deteriorating COVID situation in Los Angeles, with hospital services being overwhelmed, ICUs having reached capacity, and new guidance from state and local governments have all led us to conclude that postponing our show was the right thing to do… We want to thank all of the talented artists, the staff, our vendors and especially this year’s nominees for their understanding, patience and willingness to work with us as we navigate these unprecedented times.”

3. Carly Pearce bares all in new song ‘Didn’t Do’

Carly Pearce and Michael Ray’s very public romance and divorce has been well documented and questioned with rumours rife, but now Pearce is baring her heart and soul in a stunning new track, debuted at the Listening Room in Nashville this week – ‘Didn’t Do.’ In the track she sings ‘Everybody’s asking what the hell happened, wondering why it all went wrong. Mama always said if you can’t say nothing nice, don’t say anything at all. I’ve got my side of the story and he’s got his side too. I ain’t gonna tell you what he did, but I’ll tell you what he didn’t do.’ To say, we’re excited about her third record would be an understatement.
