Tenille Townes has always been one to experiment, push the boundaries and create unique music. Tomorrow, she is back with her new EP – Train Track Worktapes – proof of that sentiment.

Tenille Townes Train Track

One thing that has always been abundantly clear about Tenille Townes – her love for songs, the songwriting and the stories behind them. That love has always come through in her music that paints vivid pictures and stories. Tomorrow, she returns with a unique collection of songs – Train Track Worktapes. The EP was conceptualised, written, and recorded on a charity train trip that covered nearly 3,000 miles. A tradition in her native country, the CP Holiday Train benefits local food banks when their need is greatest, as each attendee brings donations to catch the free concert that occurs right on the train cars, the doors folding down to become a stage. During their 15 days onboard last December, Townes and her band played 65 shows to crowds ranging from dozens to thousands in communities across southern Canada. From this incredible tradition, came a beautiful collection of five songs.

The collection places the idea of a travelling soul front and centre. So, the first track, ‘Home to Me’ is filled with charm, in a love song where home is a lover. ‘I can’t help it, I’m a travelling soul, like that river running / I was born to go, but wherever all these winding paths and railroad tracks may lead / You’ll still be home to me.’ It’s a track that builds on the premise of what Townes has tried to achieve in this project with true power.

There’s a sense of community and musicianship that runs through on the songs. So, ‘Pieces of My Heart’ has a campfire thrumming heart in the track about life on the road ‘Keep leaving pieces of my heart / In all these towns that feel like home / Can’t help it I’m a traveller / It’s in my veins, it’s in my bones.’ There’s an inherent singalong refrain that builds this sense of musical community at its core. So too, ‘Coming Together’ is a jaunty and lively track about living and loving on the road. ‘Follow the music, the kind that makes any day better / We’ll sing about the way it feels to be right here, coming together.’

Of course, there is a deal of introspection that we have come to expect from Townes. Final track, ‘Wheels’ is a moodier and pensive track about the inevitability of time itself – ‘These wheels from spinning round‘ – so too, her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide,’ Townes shines a spotlight on her vocals, in her ability to redraft the well-known and well-covered song and pour a staggering level of poignancy into the lyrics.

Over the past few years, there has certainly been a sense of country music singers and songwriters returning to their roots, and to the heart of the song, with the growth of live albums and rough and ready recordings, like The Marfa Tapes. On Townes’ Train Track Worktapes, she continues that tradition. This collection is rough and ready, authentic country music at its finest, putting the song and the story front and centre.

Tenille Townes has announced the forthcoming release of her EP ‘Train Track Worktapes’ out on 21st April, ahead of her return to the UK as part of The Long Road festival.

Tenille Townes Train Track

Following the release of her EP Masquerades, released to critical acclaim last year, Tenille Townes has now announced the release of her forthcoming project – Train Track Worktapes – next month, a five-song project to be released 21 April.

“Being in motion is my favorite state. I love the hum of the engines and the blur of the evergreens out the window, in any mode of transportation. I really do believe that home is not a place, but a feeling that you get,” said Townes. “And being on the road, singing songs for people and feeling a part of a collective brought together through music, that feels like home to me.”

Conceptualised, written, and recorded on a charity train trip that covered nearly 3,000 miles, the Train Track Worktapes is a unique and special collection, with a powerful story.

“The generosity of everyone bringing donations to their local food banks as we travelled along was a reminder to me of how much good there is in the world, especially in the heart of the smaller, remote communities. In between all these shows, I made it my mission to write about what it felt like to witness that, ride the high and capture what I was feeling on the trip,” said Townes.

Townes, a producer on the project alongside guitarist Jaxon Hargrove, and her band got resourceful with their setup, turning suitcases into kickdrums, teacups into triangles and paperbowls into shakers. They borrowed equipment and microphones from the train cars housing the stage and gear. Recording mainly in the train’s caboose, sometimes capturing takes in 20-minute spurts between shows, the group allowed the rattle and rhythm of the train to sink into each song in its natural, fated manner.

“This collection of songs will always represent that travelling spirit. I hope anyone who listens feels like they are riding right there with us,” said Townes.

Tenille Townes has dropped her heart-breaking new single ‘The Last Time,’ along with being announced as the co-host of Canadian Country Music Awards, alongside Blanco Brown.

Songwriter, performer and 2-time ACM winner Tenille Townes drops her heartbreaking new single ‘The Last Time.’ The song talks about the universal feeling of nostalgia you get after the realisation of an occurrence in your life happened for the last time.

We always remember the first time something happens. We put it in a certain frame in our mind because we know it’s special. But the last time often doesn’t get the same frame because we don’t know that it’s happened until it’s already a part of our past. I wanted to write a song that captured that sentimental reality, with nostalgia in the fabric of the music. This song reminds me to stop and take in the moments that are happening right now, and I hope it feels like a comforting reminder to anybody else who needs it too.” – Tenille Townes

Last week, Tenille was announced as a host for the 2022 Canadian Country Music Association Awards, set for 11 September in Calgary, AB, where she is also set to perform. She additionally leads the nominations for the show this year, which include “Amazon Music and Alexa Fans’ Choice Award,” “Spotify Female Artist of the Year Award,” “Single of the Year,” “Ford F-150 Album of the Year Award,” “Video of the Year,” “Songwriter(s) of the Year” and “Entertainer of the Year!”

Country to Country is delighted to announce the return of Country Music Week in 2022 – confirming shows in London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Country to Country is delighted to announce the return of Country Music Week, confirming shows in London, Manchester and Glasgow with a host of stellar names.

Country Music Week (CMW) will feature live shows and unique events across select venues in London, Manchester and Glasgow. The events will recognise and celebrate emerging artists within the broad spectrum of country music, give fans another opportunity to discover UK and US acts early in their career and connect fans with the stories behind the songs.

Tenille Townes returns to the UK off the back of a main stage triumph at C2C Festival 2022, where she opened up the main arena in style. Expect to hear songs from Tenille’s award-winning Columbia Nashville/RCA Records debut, The Lemonade Stand.

Powerhouse vocalist Caitlyn Smith will perform intimate shows following release of her acclaimed new album. Described by Billboard as “one of Nashville’s most versatile creatives,” Smith returns to the UK following memorable performances at this year’s C2C Festival, and continues momentum built last week in Nashville, where she played five shows across CMA Fest, including spots at the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame.

Matt Stell and Elvie Shane will take to the stage together throughout Country Music Week, in what will be a unique chance to see two of country’s future superstars perform an electric set filled with their own hits and shared stories.

Nashville’s weekly, all-female songwriter round, Song Sufragettes, heads to the UK for the first time. A one-hour, weekly acoustic showcase, Song Sufragettes featuring five up-and-coming female country artists, performing exclusive, stripped-down sets.

Song Suffragettes alumni, including Carly Pearce, Tenille Arts, Lainey Wilson, Jillian Jaqueline, have consistently gone on to receive record and publishing deals. Over 300 women have performed at Song Sufragettes, whittled down from 2,000 applications, and 22 have received record deals, with over 45 artists receiving publishing deals off the back of these shows.

Made up of US and UK names, it promises to be an incredible line-up and is the best place to witness country music’s next star.

Tenille Townes joins Today’s Country Radio for an interview with Kelleigh Bannen to chat about writing vulnerable songs for her new EP ‘Masquerades.’ Plus, Tenille performs “Somebody’s Daughter” and “Same Road Home” live from the Apple Music Nashville studios, exclusively available on this episode of Today’s Country Radio.  Tune in and listen to the episode on-demand here.
Tenille Townes Recalls Playing Her First Award Show at the 2019 CMT Awards
Just play the song. That’s all you’re doing. You’re just playing a song for people. My vision was blurry. I don’t remember seeing anything beyond the stage. And I came back and was like, “oh my gosh, that just happened.” And hugged my manager. And she’s like, “Did you see everyone? Did you see everyone?” I was like, “No. I didn’t see anything.”
Tenille Townes on the Stage Being Her Quiet Place
The stage to me is the quietest time in my head, which is this weird thing if I really try to process and understand that. Because leading up to the stage, after the stage and analyzing what happened, what I could have done better. Sometimes writing is total turmoil. Being in the studio can be that way where I’m very much in my head. Photo shoots, all of those things are like there’s a lot of voices in my head sometimes in those processes. But when I’m up there, it is like the choir is silenced. And it’s awesome. I feel like, I don’t know, this kind of other side of myself in a way. I feel like both of those people. It’s like the introvert, the reflective person, the perfectionist, the over-thinker, the quiet one. And then I get on stage and it’s like I am this other version of myself.
Tenille Townes on Writing from a More Personal Spot on ‘Masquerades’ EP
Writing during that time, it just was happening. And I was terrified as it was happening. I was like, “am I really saying this in this lyric? Am I really going here?” And the answer is yes. And it’s so exciting to feel like I’ve come to this place of going, “yeah, I’m ready to kind of share more of the perspective of the inside.”
Tenille Townes on Writing “When You Need It” with Wrabel
I love that song. And honestly, one of the brightest silver linings over the weird past couple of years was getting to know Wrabel and writing songs through the distance together. So I did not realize it would be possible to write a song through a computer screen, nevermind make a true friend that way. So I love that this song marks the beginning of our friendship and the beginning… We’ve probably written over 20 songs together at this point, but it’s like this was the first one and I’m so, so glad to sing it with him. I love his voice so much. Love writing with him.
Tenille Townes on Healing Through Writing New Music on ‘Masquerades’ EP
That really feels like a really true part of how I felt in the middle of writing every single one of these songs… is it was healing and it was very much reflective of, “I don’t have this figured out, but I’m going to write about how I am learning to and my process in that.” And I’m still very much not there. I’m in the messiness. And I wanted this part of the music to kind of represent that season of my life and to be hopefully an invitation to anybody listening to be like, “Oh, cool. Okay. So we’re figuring out the same things. That’s good.”
Tenille Townes on the Idea of Tattooing Her Guitars
I had this sort of this moment of going, “I want to create something that’s a time capsule for the music that I’m making and this visual representation of the songs and the window that I’m looking out at the world through at that point.” And I thought it’d be really cool to tattoo a guitar.
Tenille Townes on Writing with Her Songwriting Hero Lori McKenna
She’s truly so disarming and is just this beautiful human. And she’s one of those people where there is that saying of “don’t meet your heroes” and there are certain people where it’s like, “Okay, it’s best to just leave you in this bubble that I have.” But when it comes to Lori in person and creating with her has far surpassed any expectation I would’ve had of her even before. So she’s pretty special.

This Friday, Tenille Townes will release her brand new EP – Masquerades – through Sony Music Nashville. The EP heralds a new, more introspective era for Townes, after the success of her debut album ‘The Lemonade Stand.’ Pre-save the EP here.

When Tenille Townes released her debut album The Lemonade Stand, she offered a fresh voice in the country industry with her unique vocal tone and rock-country sound as she sang many stories of other people. On her brand new EP Masquerades, out this Friday, Townes indulges yet further in the rock side of her vocal. This new project shows the more vulnerable and intimate side of Townes’ lyricism and songwriting as she gets far more introspective – the result is incredibly powerful.

There’s an often cliched stereotype and tendency to forcefully celebrate the joys of being single, with artists singing of being empowered in that status – just look at Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies.’ On Masquerades, instead of falling into that cliche, Townes dares to reveal her own vulnerability and fears of being alone. It is a portrait that feels immensely intimate and liberating in its honesty. So, on pre-released single ‘When’s It Gonna Happen,’ Townes becomes wistful, pondering on when she will finally find ‘the one’ – ‘I look around and all my friends are fallin’ in love / I’m scared to death i’ll end up empty handed / Can’t be the only one / Thinking when’s it gonna happen, happen to me’ – and on ‘The Sound of Being Alone,’ Townes reflects on the soundtrack of that state. The latter is a grungier, rock-tinged sound that we have come to expect from Townes. ‘Too much of anything is never a good thing / Is it a bad thing I’m good on my own / I could say anything nobody’s listening / It’s just the sound of being alone?’ It’s a moody, guitar heavy track that offers a fresh sound for Townes. ‘Same Road Home’ is another moment about the universality of that feeling of being lost in love and life. ‘Ain’t we all just looking for answers, to ones that nobody knows / Ain’t we all just dying to feel like we’re not meant to be all alone / There’s a million different ways to go, but we’re all on the same road home.’ It’s a compellingly driving and anthemic track that will be an easy standout moment on the live circuit, particularly with the easy ‘woah’ refrain.

Still, she finds love in other areas – either with a friend or a neighbour. On ‘When You Need It,’ Townes elicits the help of her friend Wrabel in a track about being there for a friend. ‘Even if it’s just to hold your hand, say keep breathin / Sometimes a friend is all we needed / I’ll be there when you need it.’ The fragility of Townes vocal marries perfectly with Wrabel’s rich tone in this gloriously comforting track. ‘Shared Walls’ featuring BRELAND is an easy stand out, singing about the universality of loneliness in Townes musical letter to her neighbour – a situation that feels universal after the pandemic. ‘We share walls, we share feelings / Nights alone, staring at the ceiling / We might act like strangers on the street / But I know a lot about you, you know a lot about me / Shared walls.’ It’s another shrewd choice for a collaboration, marrying the honeyed tone of BRELAND’s vocal with her own, an intoxicatingly compelling track that will be an easy standout for many.

Arguably her most vulnerable moment on the record is created on ‘Villain In Me,’ a song about the ugly side of her own psyche. ‘A voice that I don’t wanna hear, the hurtful words I say / Long list of things about myself I wanna change / The heavy cloud that won’t leave even after it rains / I try to be a hero ’til it brings me to my knees / Yeah, there’s a villain in me.’ It’s a state that feels universal, but is a rarely touched topic in country music, refreshing in its honesty. The stripped back production allows the lyrics to speak for themselves, with light touch instrumentation to allow Townes vocal to step to the fore. Finally, Masquerades is rounded out with the delightfully light track ‘Light In Your Eyes,’ in which Townes recognises the joy in others, a beautifully whimsical, piano-traced track.

Masquerades is a delight and it is a pleasure to spend time with Townes in this newly intimate and vulnerable space. It’s a space that many will find not only refreshing but comforting as she narrates the universality of the emotions that we all experience – from joy to loneliness to pain and sorrow. It’s one of the most compelling ‘pandemic-originated’ projects that we have yet listened to and heralds a new era for Townes.

This week, Tenille Townes will perform on the main stage at C2C Festival, following the release of a string of new singles – ‘Villain In Me,’ ‘When’s It Gonna Happen‘ and ‘Girl Who Didn’t Care.’ Here, we interview Tenille Townes about the singles, the new era of her music, her UK fans and more.

Hi, thanks, how are you doing today?

Not too bad.

How are you feeling gearing up for next week’s long haul flight?

I can’t even handle it. I’ve got my suitcase out. My heart is so ready to come back.

I think the last time you were here, you did your first headline show and now you’re on the mainstage at C2C. I know a lot of artists try and build that UK fan base, but I feel like you’ve really done it in a way that other artists maybe haven’t. Has that always been important to you and what tips would you give up and coming artists?

Oh, thank you for saying that. I mean, I am so in awe of the way that you guys listen to music and how incredibly welcoming everybody in the UK has been on my trips. We just keep coming back as much as we could – not as much as I would have liked to with everything that happened in the last two years. I mean, it’s just been some of my favorite memories of playing music there. I’m so grateful for the way that everyone’s embraced me, so I can’t wait to just keep coming back and forth more and more – I think we’re working on some things for the fall. I feel like I’m still working at it and figuring it out, but continuing to just get on the plane and make the trips is worth it. It’s so worth it, it’s just so fun. I love, love, love getting to play music on your side of the world.

Obviously this time it’s sort of like the new era, The Lemonade Stand was sort of pre-COVID and now you’re hitting this new era of music. How does that feel, because The Lemonade Stand was your debut, there must be a certain comfort in in that space. Stepping out of that, the music you’ve been releasing is so raw and so real, has that transition felt a little scary?

Absolutely. I mean Lemonade Stand was such a window of that season of my life, it was how I saw the world and it was the first record to get to work on like that. So, I had the best time getting to kind of see that come to life. There was such an emotional release once that was out into the world – to be creative, again, felt therapeutic and, honestly, the songs very much came out that time of having so much time by myself in my house. I think as a whole world, we’ve probably been some of the loneliest we’ve ever had, this new group of songs I’ve been working on, very much come from the heart of a place of processing many more of those vulnerable feelings – being in that state of reflection. So, I couldn’t really help the way the songs were just coming out more personal, which is definitely terrifying to me. I love to be the storyteller, but to really be sharing some of my own truths on a new level with this music has been super exciting and also scary to me.

My takeaway from the Lemonade Stand was beautiful, telling so many stories and shining lights on really difficult things, but I feel like this project seems very introspective. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve sent ‘When’s It Gonna Happen’  to some of my girlfriends who are going through things because I’ve never heard it sung that way, or put it that way. Can you talk about writing that song because I feel we’re always told to be empowered, be happy being by yourself, but actually sometimes there’s a real power in that vulnerability of saying the opposite?

Absolutely, I mean, this song is completely and honestly very much how I feel sometimes in being single. It’s true. It’s easy to say, ‘Hey, I am so grateful for my life and the season that I’m in and everything’s cool’, but there’s certainly moments where there’s other sides to that emotion of being single. There’s something in that reality that of course you’re not the only person who is single in the world, but there’s this feeling that comes with that, that’s like everyone else has found them. It’s not true but it feels like it’s true.

The song comes from that feeling and I wrote this song with two friends of mine that I’d actually never met in person before, we wrote it over Zoom together. We were getting to know each other and talking about what was happening in all of our own little worlds. I was looking at this stack of wedding invitations that I’d gotten in the mail from some friends and was like, ‘wow, I this is where I’m at today… why don’t we write a song about that?’ We were writing more and more lines and I felt it was honestly how I felt. It was so interesting, as we got further and further through the song, feeling that I’m not the only one who feels this way, so that was definitely encouraging for me to be able to share that this song. It has been incredible getting to hear from people, after sharing bits and pieces of it and hearing comments back like ‘this is my anthem’, ‘I feel the same way’.

It’s nice to be able to share that feeling with people. I know you wrote that one with Steph Jones and Stephen Wrabel. How was that process of forming relationships over Zoom and sharing your heart. I mean, you’ve been part of the Nashville songwriting community for such a long time now that it probably would have been easier in that timeframe to draw on the writers that you’re comfortable with, but sometimes, the best music can come out of that space of finding new voices and fresh collaborations.

Yes, absolutely. Honestly, so much of the creative time came from when no one was leaving their house, even writing with my Nashville family was going to be on Zoom too. So, it became this season of really figuring out that the music will prevail no matter what. Writing on Zoom is definitely not my favourite way to create, it’s so hard to be creating something through a screen, but it’s possible. So many songs came from that season and honestly, I think it was so helpful for my sanity and mental health to be able to focus on the creative process and be able to channel so many of the feelings and emotions that I was going through in that time and put them into songs with friends. What was interesting too, songwriting in general, whether it’s through Zoom or in person, often you walk into a room with strangers, and there’s just this common feeling of the walls are down because the music makes space for all of us to be a little more vulnerable than we maybe would.

Songwriting opens up those doors in such a special way and I felt that very much the same on Zoom and with these people that I’d never met before. Both Wrabel and Steph have become such dear friends to me in these past two years, and we’ve written a lot of songs together with other people. Between the two of them, I’m sure there’s maybe 15 or 16 songs we’ve made together and it’s just been that that was one of the brightest silver linings in that really isolating time. I was feeling close to an entire group of new friends and everyone who was navigating through the same thing.

Another of the tracks you’ve recently released is ‘Villain In Me’ which I know you released after seeing the fan reaction to it. Can you talk a bit about that one because again it’s such a vulnerable space that you opened up in that track?

It was in the heart of searching for meaning and reason, in spending way too much time by myself ,with all of my uncomfortable and vulnerable thoughts and working through some things. I think ‘Villain’ is all of us in the quietest moments and in those sort of lonely and isolating places, I think when we hear the voices in our heads the loudest, and to me, this was my way of being able to put some of those feelings into the song. I was writing this one with Alex Hope – this is the first song we’d ever written together and had never met in person. I think we were both very much struggling with similar things and the song really just found us in such an interesting light, it just sort of fell out. As we’re writing it, I was very terrified going, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever share this’ – the song is so, so personal, and eventually I turned it in and really didn’t think much of it. This was just a very therapeutic, healing song for me. The song kept pulling at me and I thought ‘maybe that is something.’ I posted a video playing it in the bathroom. It meant the world to me to hear people respond saying that it connected to something in them and somehow the villain in all of us united in the most beautiful way. I thought ‘we have to put the song out.’ That was such a special moment to me of really feeling connected to a lot of people through the distance and through a really dark time.

I guess that’s the silver lining with social media  – you’ve been able to go and get that instant feedback with fans in a way that you probably would have done if you’d been trialing the songs in live shows. I know one of the songs you’ve recently been teasing is ‘The Sound of Being Alone’ which has a different vibe to it. Has that been a conscious move with experimenting more with the rockier, heavier side of your production?

This definitely has been going, ‘okay, how do I want this music to feel in a live show?’ especially coming out of missing live shows so much. It was really fun to dream about – if we’ve got an entire new collection of songs, what do I want that to feel like when we can finally all come together and sing it together? That was very intentional behind the creation of all this, but in the same respect, I trust the music and the way that it comes to life. I follow the music arrows – to me it connects to something in me that feels good. There’s a gravity and the song very much was just exploring. I wrote this with my friends Meg and Dan Wilson – he had this really cool guitar thing going and we just started talking about the sounds that we were hearing in all of our respective houses. It really, really felt like this kind of moody, tormented thing –  I love the way that it’s reflected in the music. I can’t wait to get that one out there hopefully soon.

Obviously, you have also come off your first headlining tour – how was that for your soul? Generally, how did it feel?

I can’t even tell you in words, it was so special to get to do that. We started at the end of last year, getting to tour back to the homeland and Canada and seeing people come out – knowing the songs, singing them together, it blew me away that people got a ticket and came to the shows and just that sense of community. Being able to do our first round of our shows for the first time and cultivating that sort of community night after night was remarkable. I had the best time and I can’t wait to come back to those places and to keep going to new places and just keep meeting new friends, because I’m having the time of my life.

Finally, is the plan to continue to release music the way you have been doing – sort of drip feeding it – because I feel like this is the new way for fans to connect a little bit more with every song?

Yes, which is exciting to me. This is such a new horizon of releasing music – I will always be an album romantic at heart. It’s exciting to show a little bit more of a spotlight on individual songs on the way there. I’ve got some fun things up my sleeve to get to share hopefully in the next couple of weeks, so I’m really excited to get some more new stuff out there.

Exciting!

Well thank you so much Tenille, it’s always a pleasure to talk with you and safe travels!

Tenille Townes has released her stunning new single ‘When’s It Gonna Happen,’ a track about being single whilst watching everyone else fall in love. The single comes as Townes is currently on the road opening for George Strait and Reba. Listen to the track here.

Following widespread fan support, Tenille Townes has released her new song ‘When’s It Gonna Happen’ a beautiful track about the hope for love, delivered in Townes’ shrew lyricism and powerful vocal. Of the track, Townes shares, I wrote this song because it’s a real and true window into my life right now and how I feel sometimes about being single. I know that if it’s something I’m feeling, then there must be others who feel the same way I do. I wanted to create something that would speak to them too!… I’ve shared a few pieces of the song on socials, and it has been the most encouraging and exciting thing seeing people comment and say that they feel the same way. I’m really so excited to share the rest of this song with everybody and can’t wait to sing it at the top of our lungs together on the road!”

With lyrics like “Sometimes I feel like I’m the last one standing / I look around and all my friends are falling in love,” it’s little wonder fans connected with the hope, insecurity, fear, and anticipation Townes brings to life through the driving track that showcases a new side to her music. Again, Townes has a unique and raw approach to her music that leaves her unafraid to share her true self and perspective.
